Jump To It

Posted on September 21, 2006.
Hello friends,
Welcome to the September issue of the JIM message….Jump to it!  Anyone
remember the Aretha Franklin song “Jump, Jump Jump to It”?
Many of you may have heard the term
plyometrics or jump training. Basically, plyometric movements improve
your explosive power by training the elasticity of your muscles. There
is no area of sports performance that would not be enhanced by utilizing
and adding plyometrics. We have been hearing about plyometrics since
the late 1950’s. My coach and mentor Steve Ilg has been using
plyometrics in his own world- class training for some 25 years and was
acknowledged for his contributions to the book High-Powered Plyometrics.
Early in 2006 Coach Ilg started me on my very first plyometric
journey–did i mention the INTENSITY of plyometrics. Very challenging,
particularly for women, however incredibly beneficial and I came out of
my months of jump training feeling stronger than ever before.
That experience lead me to re-aquaint myself with
my jump rope.  Being the eternally optimistic woman that I
am, though not having jumped rope for probably 30+ years, I thought “no
biggie–just take out the rope and go!”  Boy was I wrong.
As I took the rope to the street and very awkwardly attempted to
jump, my neighbor watched, cringing and waiting for me to fall flat on
my face.  I didn’t fall, however it did not go as I had
planned.  I felt winded and clumsy and was not having much
fun.  Discouraged, I knew there had to be another way to
jump rope, and set out to find the solution. There had to be a technique
which I was not yet embodying.
This lead me to jump rope artist Rene Bibaud, with
whom I am pictured.  Please take the time to check out
Rene’s website, www.jumpropenet.com
and learn more about her. When i was up in Seattle this summer I took
private jumping lessons with her and it was AWESOME. Jump roping yields
the highest aerobic benefits per minute.  Ten minutes at
your aerobic heart rate burns approximately the same number of calories
as 30 minutes of aerobic jogging.  It is very easy to
exceed your aerobic heart rate so please start slowly.  I
am having fun with my jump rope and have started my private personal
training clients jump roping and we are all, as Aretha says, Jumping To
It!  I hope you will join in……….
An update for you: I did, as I had told you all I
would, complete my Lifeguard certification.  It was much
more physically, mentally and emotionally demanding than I ever could
have imagined. Thank you all for encouraging me when I announced last
month that I would be taking the training.
On another note. it occurs to me that sometimes we
plan out possible solutions to the big problems, while ignoring the
smaller things we do. Sure, it is necessary to set goals and make long-
range plans. Just don’t forget that the everyday decisions you make
about your health are as important as well.
To all the other Virgos out there I wish you a
happy and healthy birthday and may you ALL enjoy the fruits of a
Joyinmovement lifestyle!
